Monday in Korea

Today  wasn't as busy as yesterday.
We had breakfast  on the patio of the bakery close to David's place.  No rain today--it was very pleasant.    David had to finish up a few things at the university, so I went along, and met several of his friend there.  As soon as he opened the door to the office area, a fellow immediately gave me a big hug, and said, "Welcome, David's mom!"  That was my introduction to Leon--a very good friend of David's.  He is from Nova Scotia, and has been here for about 12 years.  A number of other friends were there as well-the semester is finished, but they all had to complete their paper work.

While David was completing his work at the university, Leon gave me another tour of the city.  The fountain is at the school.  The whole area would be very nice, but it is not well maintained.  I found that very disappointing.  There are a lot of trees like the one about.  I don't know what they are--the leaves look like small maple leaves, and have little keys on them right now.

We went to a very old Korean village.  Many years ago, the villages were walled, people lived inside the walls, and went out each day to do their farming.  Above is a picture of bamboo trees just inside the walls.
The gate that everyone had to pass through to get inside.
There was an additional wall around the residence of the king.

The king's residence was very ornate.  The entire building was made without nails--all the parts were cut to fit together tightly.  The village reminded me a lot of the pioneer villages that we have  at home.
I was disappointed in the flower beds--I thought there would be more exotic flowers, but they are just petunias, merigolds, and dusty millers!
A gazebo on the sidewalk where 4 very old trees are twined together and provide the shade overhead.  The men here are playing a Chinese chess game.
A man dressed in traditional garb.

David and I went to an interesting place for lunch.  It was a food court.  There were sample pictures of all the meals you could order.  You made your choice, paid for it, and then picked it up at the various food stands at the food court.  Very efficient!

Spam is very popular here--the grocery stores sell a lot of it!

I'm catching up on my sleep finally--had a long nap this afternoon.  This evening we are going out to dinner with some of David's friends.  I guess I'm going to have to learn to be more proficient with chopsticks!  I remember Stephen saying that David had a great group of friends, and I am finding that out!

This is the car that David's friends gave him for his birthday!
The World Cup Soccer stadium, built for the 2002 World Cup.

Koreans must be very exercise-conscious--many city parks have permanent exercise equipment.  David says that they are well-used.
Imagine having to navigate your way through the city with these signs to guide you!
 Even u-turns are allowed here!

This is a large park in the middle of the city, with a huge lake.  Half of the lake was covered with water plants--looked like water lilies.
There were swan- and dragon-shaped paddle boats on the lake.
Several parks had these very tall swings.

Traffic here is unbelieveable!  This looks like it should be a pedestrian promenade.  The street is made with beautiful paving stones, and there are pedestrians everywhere.  There are no sidewalks, just yellow lines painted on the side of the street.  Cars park there in either direction, and so the actual street is very narrow.  But they still have 2-way traffic there.  And many of the store have out-door displays competing for space there as well!
You can see how cars park  on the sides of the street in either direction.
 And they double park too!

My First Day In Korea

Well, I shall start my journalling!

My flight here went very smoothly.  I found that I was definitely in the minority as I was in line waiting to get on the plane!  I have no complaints about it at all, but it was very crowded.  I had an aisle seat, so I was able to stretch my legs out quite well.  Thirteen hours in an airplane is a very long time, no matter how you look at ti!  All my reading said to get up and walk around regularly, but there really was no room to walk.  The aisles were less than 24", I'm sure.  So it was surprising that the flight attendants were able to pass out the meals as quickly as they could.  I didn't have a window seat, but we were up about 36,000 ft, so I don't think that I would have been able to see anything anyway.

Incheon airport is huge!  It was really strange, seeing Korean signs everywhere.  I had no idea where I was going, so I just followed everyone else.  After going through customs and getting my baggage, I finally saw David, and it was so good to see someone familiar at that point!

We took a bus to JeanJu--a very luxurious bus, compared to the plane--lots of leg room, comfortable seats that went 'way back.  Nice!  When we got to JeonJu, David found us a cab to get to his place.  My introduction to Korean traffic!  By this time, it was dark and rainy, so I couldn't see too much, but the driver was quite aggressive in his driving!  I was also impressed by David's command of the language.

David has quite a nice apartment.  He has 2 rooms, each about the size of my bedroom at home.  He graciously has lent me his bedroom, while he sleeps in the living room/kitchen.  The bathroom is very small, and the bathroom is the shower (there is a drain on the floor!).

We went to church in the afternoon, so he showed me around the city today.  We went out for breakfast where we had kimbab (looks like sushi but no fish, stuffed with vegetables, cubed ham and egg rolled in rice and then seaweed) and nangmyun (a cold soup with noodles, vegetables, and egg).  The Kimbab was pretty good, and I actually managed the chopsticks(!).  The nangmyun was OK too, but it is more of an acquired taste!

Then we went driving!  Traffic there is unbelievable.  Sidewalks in the downtown areas are non-existent--just little more than a yellow line painted on the side of the street.  The streets are quite narrow, the lanes are narrow, and the cars park where ever they wish.  So there is parking on both sides of the street (on the narrow sidewalk area)--and they park on which ever side of the street they wish, so the street ends up being very narrow--one car can get through.  But you must remember that these are 2 way streets!  And since there are cars parked on the sidewalk areas, pedestrians then walk in the middle of the street.  I took lots of pictures, but I'll post them tomorrow--I'm too tired now!

There are quite a few parks around--important since everyone lives in apartment buildings.  The doors for the apartment buildings are right off the street--no walkway to get there.  Everything looks very crowded.  So a lot of the parks have fitness equipment there.  I'll post pictures of that as well.

This first day has been interesting.  I feel like I am so out of place.  I have a better understanding of what David went through when he first moved here (as well as Jenn when she went to Japan).  I can't even decipher the street signs or billboards.  (The alphabet is totally different!).  It's a good experience.  I still can't believe that I'm actually here--I keep thinking it's a dream and that I will wake up back in Belleville!

It was good going to church in the afternoon.  It was just another reminder that no matter where we are or who we are with, we worship the same God, who is not bound by space.

I will sign off now, and post pictures tomorrow.  Love you all!

Getting Ready for my Exciting Trip!

Hello family!
Just thought that I would let you all know that while I am in South Korea, I would try journalling on line on this blog, and post pictures about my time here.  So this entry is a dry run to see if it works.

David had thought it would be fun to go to China as a side trip.  But we had forgotten that China is a communist country, and has rather stringent rules as to who can enter and how long they can stay.   He thought we would have to fly to HongKong to get my visa, but that may not work.  I thought that maybe I could go to the embassy here, but they need to have copies of the return airline tickets, and hotel reservations.  David's visa is easier to obtain, since he has an alien registration card for Korea.

So that is a bit disappointing, but I'm sure that there will be lots to see and do, without going to some exotic place like China!

So the next time I post here, I will be doing it from the other side of the world!
